9:00 AM–11:00 AM  Beyond Your Plate Tour – RSVP Required @ wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ the Intellectual House

Want to know about food in the Pacific Northwest? Come on this foodscape tour that will start at wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ Intellectual House and walk nearby to learn about the land, the waterways, the plants, the people and their interrelationships. The Intellectual House reclaimed and honor the plants, trees and food gathering regions of their ancestors to create a gathering space for cultures and communities to share knowledge and history. The tour will focus on the stories about the plants and people, and various ways of knowing and also make stops at McMahon Terrace, a UW Farm site that teaches about sustainable urban agriculture, and the Medicinal Herb Garden. At the end we will cook food together and learn about more about upcoming events, classes to take, and various clubs/associations to connect with to further understand the land at UW, and bringing back the wealth of this land. Students who study economics learn to decode the systems that are a part of our everyday lives using models and a variety of social and economic data to analyze how decisions are made, and how limited resources are made, traded, and used. In this session, students will be able to get helpful information about the Department of Economics Undergraduate Program and its Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science majors. Students will also have an opportunity to meet with Department of Economics advisers, and get helpful tips on pursuing Economics as a major at the UW.

Take a break to pause, breathe, and reconnect to your center through the science and art of meditation. Join us at Grieg Garden to debunk common meditation myths, understand the benefits of the practice, mindfully sip a cup of nourishing tea, and to sit for a brief guided breath meditation. Meditation is an incredible tool to help mitigate the potential daily stress of being college student. Empower yourself to Increase mental clarity, improve productivity, reduce physical tension, and gain a more expanded conscious perspective. No prior experience with meditation required. Bring a yoga mat or blanket to sit on.

3:00 PM–4:00 PM  Leaves, Coffee Grounds, Compost, Oh My! @ Leaves from Drumheller Fountain

Compost? What’s that? Join UW Grounds and UW Recycling for this on-campus tour to witness composting firsthand and learn why compostable material such as food scraps, coffee grounds and leaves isn’t waste but a resource. UW Grounds manages an on-campus compost facility where select leaves and coffee grounds from campus are processed into a rich soil amendment for use on campus landscaping and grounds. This facility helps divert valuable materials from the landfill and plays an integral role in fulfilling the University’s sustainability commitments.

Meet your Dawg Daze Leader at Drumheller Fountain at 3:00pm (group leaves 3:10pm) and walk together to the UW Compost Facility located near Corp Yard 2 (by the Urban Horticulture Center and UW Farm). Plan to wear comfortable shoes and to walk about 20 minutes to the facility.

Join advisers from the Department of History for a trip across Elliott Bay to Alki Beach! We’ll meet at the southeast end of Drumheller Fountain at 12:30pm and head to Pioneer Square to catch the King County Water Taxi for breathtaking views of the Seattle skyline.

Bring your UPASS for free rides on Sound Transit Link Light Rail and the Water Taxi. Alki Beach is a fun sandy beach with a bustling boardwalk, perfect for dipping your toes in the water or people-watching. Plus we will stop for sweets at Top Pot Donuts!

Nestled in between downtown Seattle and the Central District, Capitol Hill is one of Seattle's most eclectic neighborhoods. A hodgepodge collection of shops, restaurants, rainbow flags, and iconic Seattle venues, Capitol Hill is seen by many as the center for experiencing "the scene." Explore some of Seattle's most interesting stores, coffee shops, and more as you take in the culture. What’s more—you can get there in less time than it takes to choose a filter on Instagram (4 minutes from UW Station to Capitol Hill Station via Link light rail!).

Come explore downtown Seattle with fellow UW students and learn how to get around using your U-PASS. Take a walk through Pike Place Market, down to the waterfront, or to the Aquarium. Find local shopping spots like Westlake Center and Pacific Place. Locate a few movie theatres, and figure out how to get back to campus on your own. Students love these tours, and the fun is only a traffic-free 8 minute ride on Link light rail!

This One Bus Away Tour will be an exploration of the Northgate neighborhood, home to a huge mall that was recently renovated to include new and exciting shops and restaurants. Target, Ross, TJ Maxx, Best Buy and many others are located in Northgate as well.

Seattle Center is an arts and entertainment institution that is home to Bumbershoot, sporting events, and more. Dick's, one of Seattle's most popular burger experiences, is located in Lower Queen Anne.

9:30 AM–12:30 PM  Husky Cycling Club Intro Rides @ Departs from the Husky Union Building (HUB)

Come kick off the school year with the Husky Cycling Club! The Husky Cycling Club is open to all UW students, faculty, and staff, and welcomes all skill and experience levels. In addition to maintaining an active recreational riding scene year-round, Husky Cycling fields powerhouse road, cyclocross, mountain bike, and track racing teams with regional and national championship titles.

This ride is the perfect chance to meet fellow UW cyclists, ask questions about the club, and learn about how you can get involved with UW's biggest and most diverse cycling community. Riders will meet in front of the HUB (entrance facing the Allen Library) and then ride in different groups based on distance, speed, and time preferences. There will be suitable options for everyone, from those just getting started to avid cyclists and experienced racers. Come on the ride today and see what it’s all about! Social pace, no-drop policy, stops for water, and a free team lunch provided at the end of the ride!

Did you know there is a farmer's market just next door? Join the College of Environment Student Ambassadors for a tour of the U-District Farmers Market! Support local businesses and snag some free samples from vendors from the Greater Seattle Area! You can find all sorts of exciting (and sustainably sourced!) foods, such as fern shoots, known as "fiddleheads," squid-ink pasta, and homemade cheeses. The tour is only for the first half hour, then feel free to explore the market! Don't forget to bring some cash in case you find something tasty to bring home! (Bonus: UW students get $2 coupons when you show your Husky Card!).

Explore some of Seattle's most interesting stores, coffee shops, and more as you take in the culture. What’s more—you can get there in less time than it takes to choose a filter on Instagram (4 minutes from UW Station to Capitol Hill Station via Link light rail!).

This event is a required event for all new freshmen students. Immediately following, you'll meet for Peer Connections with a student leader, or if you're in a First-year Interest Group (FIG) or Transfer FIG, then you will meet with your FIG Leader. Meet current students eager to show you the ropes. Check-in begins at 1:45pm if you still need your Dawg Pass. If you already have your Dawg Pass, no need to check-in.

11:00 AM–1:00 PM  Environmental and Technology Lab Tours – RSVP Required @ Meets at Drumheller Fountain

The environmental lab tour is a chance for students to explore laboratories and makerspaces commonly used by undergraduate students in the College of the environment, particularly in the Oceanography, Aquatic & Fishery Sciences, and Bioresource Science & Engineering departments. Spaces included in the tour are the wind tunnel, the UW bioresource labs, the ocean technology center, the analog Puget Sound model in the old oceans building, and the UW Fish Collection.

Current College of the Environment students and faculty will be present along the way to discuss their research, including pioneering work in hydrodynamics, biofuels, and fisheries conservation, making for an excellent opportunity in networking and learning about research as a new Husky.

Since our founding in 2010, we've funded 100 projects; a handful of which we'll visit on the tour! We highly encourage you to bring your own bike and helmet. The University of Washington and the U District Partnership present Up Your Ave, a welcome event for incoming and returning UW students. From NE 41st St to NE 50th St all along University Way NE, a.k.a. "The Ave," During Up Your Ave, students travel “the Ave” collecting stamps from participating businesses. Additionally there are booths located along the sidewalks for sponsors, non-profits and other U District Businesses. The event culminates with a Party on the Street with music and games! There will be live music and tables with information on community involvement organizations. Great prizes, games and give-aways are featured at our local businesses. Come learn how you can get involved in your new community, check out the local scene, and explore the many restaurants and shops along "The Ave." Get all of the required stamps in your "Passport" and claim your free "UP YOUR AVE" T-shirt.

Join Northwest Women, the RSO, in kicking off the quarter with a beginner to intermediate hike in the Cascades! Northwest Women is a group of ladies who share the same enthusiasm for the adventures and experiences had in the outdoors! Pre-registration is required, contact nwwomen@uw.edu to RSVP or with questions!

The meeting spot will be the N5 Parking Lot. You will receive an email confirming your spot and more information on the hike.

9:30 AM–12:30 PM  Husky Cycling Club Intro Rides @ Departs from the Husky Union Building (HUB)

Come kick off the school year with the Husky Cycling Club! The Husky Cycling Club is open to all UW students, faculty, and staff, and welcomes all skill and experience levels. In addition to maintaining an active recreational riding scene year-round, Husky Cycling fields powerhouse road, cyclocross, mountain bike, and track racing teams with regional and national championship titles.

This ride is the perfect chance to meet fellow UW cyclists, ask questions about the club, and learn about how you can get involved with UW's biggest and most diverse cycling community. Riders will meet in front of the HUB (entrance facing the Allen Library) and then ride in different groups based on distance, speed, and time preferences. There will be suitable options for everyone, from those just getting started to avid cyclists and experienced racers. Come on the ride today and see what it’s all about! Social pace, no-drop policy, stops for water, and a free team lunch provided at the end of the ride!
